An alarming number of American citizens suffer from heartburn, gastro esophageal reflux disease, ulcers and acid reflux. Foods that contain citrus, spices and dietary fats are great contributors to these ailments.

What many don’t know is the negative effects regarding existing acid reflux and coffee. Caffeine is, also, a contributor toward the increased sufferings of acid reflux as it’s known to aggravate these existing conditions by promoting hyperacidity within the stomach and digestive tracts.

Some people experience occurrences of acid reflux so infrequently that they might forget the last time and incident happened. Other people, though, suffer from acid reflux much more frequently, even having acid indigestion more than once a day!

It’s common for those suffering for acid reflux to depend solely on antacids and medications to relieve such an ailment. Many of these people, though, don’t realize that a slight change in diet can produce the same results, such as reducing the amounts of coffee they drink.

Acid reflux is the occurrence of acid from the stomach is forced up into the esophagus, generally known as heartburn. This only occurs, though, when the esophageal sphincter weakens. The esophageal sphincter is a encircling muscle between the esophagus and the stomach. Studies have proven that there exists a very close association with the ingestion of caffeine, especially in high quantities, and the negative effects of heartburn.

Most people that hear the word caffeine automatically associate the term with coffee. What remains unknown to a lot of people, though, is that caffeine is also present in such tasty delights as cocoa, tea, aerated beverages and chocolate.

People might reduce their coffee intake, but continue normal ingestion of the others. This, of course, only helps slightly. As acid reflux worsens, it becomes what is known as gastro esophageal reflux disease, or GERD.

The common ailments associated with GERD are as follows. Chest pain, bleeding, stricture of the esophagus, Barrett’s esophagus, swallowing complications and choking. Now, the inability to decrease caffeine intake is not the only way to increase the harmful effects of acid reflux, becoming GERD, but consuming alcoholic beverages and pregnancy have been known to be as equal a culprit.

Caffeinated products tend to increase the process that empties gastric acid from the body which, after time, damages the tissue of the intestines. Obviously, then, to reduce this process, the sufferer must decrease their consumption of caffeine in order to, hopefully, reverse this unwelcome ailment.

As in anything, though, unless a person is addicted to such things and must seek professional assistance in order to decrease this unnecessary intake, it’s best to just cut caffeine from the diet altogether.

Begin by altering your diet. Substitute caffeinated products with non-caffeinated products. Acid reflux and coffee can prove to be a painful combination. Soy is an excellent substitute. Herbal coffees also make for great alternatives.

Not only can you decrease, or reverse, the negative effects of acid reflux by removing caffeine from your diet, but you’ll also notice a substantial decrease from chronic stress, adrenaline exhaustion and any other ailments that are associated with caffeine. There’s nothing to lose but ailments, themselves.

Alvin Hopkinson is a leading health researcher in the area of natural remedies and acid reflux cure.

Acid reflux is a condition that affects so many people all over the world from all generations of all genders yet there are so many cases of the painful illness that go undiagnosed and also untreated. There are various forms of acid reflux treatment that a sufferer can try to make their condition more bearable and finding out about these is a good way for you to come to the right decision about the ones that you will want to try.

First of all, medication is one acid reflux treatment that a lot of people opt for and is also one of the easiest options. There are both over the counter and prescription medication that a sufferer can take to make the symptoms of acid reflux more manageable.

Of course prescription medications can only be obtained by a medical professional so seeing a doctor is a necessity. With the over the counter medications you can get them from most places such as pharmacies and supermarkets but can be quite expensive.

Generally these prescription medications should only be used as short term acid reflux treatment and long term usage is not advised. However, as a short term method of maintaining the symptoms they can be very effective.

Another form of acid reflux treatment that is highly advised while taking prescription medicated remedies is to make small lifestyle changes in order to prevent the symptoms from occurring again rather than stopping them once they have already started.

These things will include changing fatty and unhealthy foods for healthier ones and giving up smoking or cutting down on the amount of alcoholic drinks consumed. Diets are also particularly helpful at this time and there are a few diet plans which can make such a difference to the seriousness and also timing of the acid reflux symptoms, reducing them significantly.

Another slightly unusual acid reflux treatment is to belch. Although rather an unattractive method of reducing symptoms, it has been proven to help with the condition. Pressure is releases when belching occurs and this can help to relieve the stress and strain on the stomach area.

One last acid reflux treatment that is generally only used in more severe cases of the condition is surgery. Although a rather drastic measure it can help when all other methods have been exhausted to no avail.

The surgery itself is actually designed to increase the functioning of the LES valve which is designed to stop the acid from being released and there are two types of surgery available, one invasive and one that is not so much. It has been suggested that those that have had one of the two types of surgery have remained to be free of symptoms in ninety percent of the time, making it one of the most effective acid reflux treatment for those where every other has failed.

Alvin Hopkinson is a leading health researcher in the area of natural remedies and acid reflux cure.

For some people, acid reflux treatment in a medicated form may not always be the best option. There are a number of reasons for this, but one of the most important ones is that these are designed to be used only in the short term and long term usage is not always recommended by your doctor.

Although acid reflux treatment is great for those that are looking for short term relief from some rather painful symptoms, using it in the long term could lead to a dependency on the drugs which can also affect other medication that you are taking.

With regards to reflux treatment, sometimes alternative and more natural methods would have a better effect on the condition and these do not have to be massively life changing things. It could be as simple as watching what you eat a little more closely or just quitting smoking.

Although these things may seem difficult to incorporate at first, after a while you will hardly notice the changes aside from the fact that the reflux treatment that you once needed in a medicated form may not have such as major feature in your life.

Aside from changing your diet so that you are ingesting less in the way of fatty or acidic foods, making sure you have enough exercise can make the world of difference to whether or not you need reflux treatment in the form of prescription medicines that your physician may have administered.

As little as half an hour of exercise three or four times a week can mean that the symptoms that you normally associate with your reflux problem may be lessened and therefore making life more bearable.

There are a few changes to your life that you can make to avoid the need for medicated reflux treatment and these include not wearing your clothes too tight around your stomach area. This can slow down the digestion process setting the path for digestion problems like acid reflux. Even loosening your belt by a notch or two can make a massive difference.

All in all, the ways in which you decide to change your life for the better to avoid the need for acid reflux treatment that you must get from a pharmacy or from your doctor is up to you, but after a little while, these small changes will have made an awful lot of difference to the symptoms that you have as well as the way you look at food, so perhaps it is time to start making those changes now?

Alvin Hopkinson is a leading health researcher in the area of natural remedies and acid reflux cure.

Whenever we are afflicted by some illness, our first instinct is to find the right cure. Being afflicted with acid reflux doesn’t make any difference since this is known to be a very painful experience. Thus, a quest for an acid reflux relief is but normal.

Finding the acid reflux relief may take some time as proper diagnosis is needed by a physician for the right drug medication to prescribe. The symptoms may be that of acid reflux but the doctor has to make sure that no other disorder is behind it or looming ahead of it.

What is acid reflux?

Acid reflux is the burning sensation we experience in the chest. This is due to the moving upward of the stomach acids but gets trapped in the esophagus. As the stomach acids remain in the esophagus, the lining of the esophagus becomes inflamed. Hence, the burning sensation that may lasts for a number of minutes which may tend to recur due to poor eating habits.

The other symptoms of acid reflux will add more to our distress as we find it difficult to swallow, feel nauseous and even worse, vomit due to the bitter sour taste in our mouth. This will lead to our natural desire to find an acid reflux relief to release us from all the symptoms and discomfort.

Acid Reflux Relief and its Side Effects

The acid reflux relief will be dependent on the analysis of the attending physician. The most common treatments are as follows:

1. Antacids - For fast but short relief in the reduction of stomach acids. This should not be recommended to people with mental retardation, seizures and kidney disease.

2. H2 blockers – The objective of H2 blockers is to reduce the stomach acids but the relief will be felt at a later period. However, once the drug takes effect, the relief is longer than that of an antacid. This drug reduces the effectiveness of other drugs for heart problems, asthma, seizures, yeast problems and anxiety.

3. Bismuth Subsalicylate – Aside from killing the germs in the stomach, it balances the stomach fluids by means of bowel movements. This is also used in treating nausea and diarrhea. In like manner, drugs for blood-thinning, gout, arthritis and diabetes will become less effective if bismuth subsalicylate is taken in. Further, this is known to inflame the liver and brain of children with flu and chickenpox.

4. Proton Pump Inhibitors – This will stop the production of acids in the stomach and will be effective only after 1 to 4 days of usage. The side effect is similar to H2 blockers.

If any of these acid reflux medicines is given by your physician as acid reflux relief, it is always appropriate to check the label and other contra-indications.

What does it take to have permanent relief?

There are two most important ways to cure ourselves of the acid reflux syndrome. One is to abstain from all the food that triggers our acid reflux syndrome and second, change our lifestyle or eating habits.

Being over weight, lying down flat on our backs right after eating and wearing clothes that are too tight for comfort. These are the most common habits that hamper our digestive system from functioning properly.

It is best to aim for relief with a permanent goal in mind. Relieving your acid reflux symptom with only the present discomfort in mind is rather unwise. Sooner or later, your poor eating habits will catch up with you since the esophagus cannot withstand too much acid frequently and regularly. This will eventually lead to bleeding or worse, cancer. Thus, no amount of acid reflux relief can help you.

Alvin Hopkinson is a leading health researcher in the area of natural remedies and acid reflux treatment.

Acid Reflux or GERD is a severe digestive condition that affects 1 out of every 10 adults in their lifetime. The disease is obviously very common, yet often goes untreated.

If treated, it is generally treated with the use of drugs which does not cure the problem. The drug treatment only provides a temporary remedy for acid reflux disease symptoms. The systems develop quickly and can be extremely painful and disruptive.

GERD develops when the liquid content of the stomach travels back into the esophagus. The food is not fully digested by the acid and enzymes (chemicals that helps breakdown food to be used by the body) causing a build- up of acid. The lining of the organ becomes inflamed and damaged.

The damage primarily results into a burning sensation in the chest just behind the breastbone as well as in the throat after eating. When this feeling persist every day for months at a time, you have developed acid reflux.

Acid reflux disease symptoms become very prominent after time. It is important that you seek medical attention as soon as possible. The symptoms may vary from person to person or you may experience them all. Most people suffering with GERD will experience considerable discomfort which affects the quality of life and every day activities.

In severe cases, the symptoms are extremely painful; equating to severe scarring of the esophagus. This makes it difficult to swallow and increases the risk for developing cancer of the esophagus.

The most common symptom of acid reflux disease is heartburn. Heartburn can be mild or moderate and severe or chronic. The symptom may occur several times a week to several times a day. About 20% of adults will experience heartburn at least once a month and the symptom generally occurs after eating.

This and other digestive problems occur when the stomach acid causes irritation to the lining of the esophagus. Specifically, it is a painful burning sensation that begins in the upper abdomen behind the breastbone. It then travels from the diaphragm all the way to the throat. This may be accompanied by a sour taste of the food re- entering your mouth.

Another symptom of GERD is regurgitation. Regurgitation is an effortless digestive disorder that leaves a sour taste in the mouth. The sour taste is the food traveling back into the mouth.

It is the return of gastric or esophageal contents into the pharynx without pre- signs of nausea, retching, or abdomen contractions. Acid reflux victims typically regurgitate acidic liquid mixed with small amounts of undigested food.

Dysphagia is yet another symptom that acid reflux patients experience. More common in adults, dysphagia is a term defined as “difficulty swallowing.” Specifically, because the esophagus is irritated or scarred, foods or liquid is not able to properly pass from the mouth, into the throat, and down the esophagus.

Lastly, chest pain is also common amongst the acid reflux symptoms. Chest pain is caused by an unpleasant burning sensation in the chest. This burning is extremely painful and may last for a few hours. Additionally, the burning feeling can travel up into the throat mixed with a sour taste. This feeling worsens if the person lies down immediately after a meal.

As you can see, acid reflux disease symptoms are intense. If not treated in a timely manner, they can lead to other sever medical conditions such as cancer, hypertension, and asthma.

Alvin Hopkinson is a leading health researcher in the area of natural remedies and acid reflux cure.

Acid Reflux and indigestion is often mistaken as one and the same. Both disorder stem from too much acid production but differ in several ways. The main difference lies in the manner by which acid was prompted to cause disorder. Indigestion and its acid irregularity may lead to acid reflux but the latter will not develop any further into indigestion.

Acid reflux and digestion can be further differentiated by simply defining the inherent characteristics of the two disorders. Acid reflux or also known as Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is the result of eating too much and not providing the stomach enough gravitational pull to hold the food down. Hence, the acid in the stomach regurgitates upward and gets trapped in the esophagus.

Indigestion on the other hand is a result of eating too many and too fast. The rapidity by which the stomach is filled with food promotes the production of too much acid which can cause the heartburn or chest pain.

The chest pain is a result of being unable to pass air through the mouth or what we commonly know as belching. Once we are able to pass air by belching, the chest pain discomfort of indigestion becomes relieved. If not, we can then resort to taking in antacids.

Symptomatic Differences Between Acid Reflux and Indigestion

In acid reflux, the trapped acid in the esophagus causes the burning sensation in the mid-chest, at the back of the breast bone and in the middle of the abdomen. One may even experience dry cough, difficulty swallowing and symptoms of asthma. Smoking, having hernia, being overweight and other intestinal problems may cause acid reflux or heartburn.

Furthermore, acid reflux if it often occurs and improperly treated may lead to cancer of the esophagus. The cancer disorder is life threatening hence, the need for proper medication should be addressed.

On the other hand, indigestion or medically known as dyspepsia which is mainly caused by over-eating at a rapid pace causes the digestive system to work double-time. Hence, too much acid is produced but remains in the stomach as it tries hard to dissolve all the food stored. .

Discomforts will come in the form of chest pains, gassy episodes and shoulder pains due to the trapped gasses which you couldn’t manage to release by simply burping. These conditions in indigestion can lead to acid reflux heartburn.

Acid Reflux and Indigestion – Differences in Treatment

Acid reflux as a form of a disorder is medically declared as incurable. Intakes of antacid merely provide temporary relief but the persistence of your poor diet and improper lifestyle promotes recurrence. If bouts of heartburn or chest pains persist despite the intake of antacids, chances are the sufferer is on the verge of a heart attack. Immediate medical attention is therefore a must.

If acid reflux becomes a constant occurrence during and after every meal, the esophagus is highly threatened of being eroded by the constant presence of acid in its lining. The treatment therefore now requires a more intent and complex form of medication with the possibility of surgery as a last resort.

Indigestion on the other hand can be cured by simple antacids. If no immediate relief is achieved, the doctor may prescribe an antacid that has stronger dosage or composition. However, if both of these remedies do not provide relief from chest pains, your indigestion or dyspepsia may have already developed into an acid reflux disorder.

In which case, proper medical attention is now called for as the chest pains may also indicate more than just an acid reflux disorder. Persistence in chest pains despite intakes of antacid may indicate the onset of a heart attack.

The efficiency of the treatments in both acid reflux and indigestion can only be achieved if the foremost requirement of changing your diet and your lifestyle takes place.

Alvin Hopkinson is a leading health researcher in the area of natural remedies and acid reflux treatment.

You may have heard of acid reflux or heartburn. You may also have experienced the symptoms of the condition from time to time. However, have you ever sat back and looked into what might be causing the problem? Acid reflux causes could be the answer to maintaining your condition and the more you know, the easier it will be to handle.

It is all very good and well taking medicated treatments for acid reflux but at the end of the day, these are generally only meant to be used in the short term and long term usage could cause to further problems. It is not unheard of for a patient to become dependent on this medication in order to combat the condition but it is a much better idea to look at the acid reflux causes to try and prevent the symptoms rather than stop them once they have started.

Various foods have been well known for being acid reflux causes and by learning the foods that can cause this condition you can then avoid them and potentially avoid the symptoms. Among the foods that you may wish to avoid, you will find the following:

• Caffeinated products. Unfortunately for most of us, this means tea, coffee and even chocolate. However, all of these things are well known for relaxing the LES valve which is designed to stop the acid reflux. So, next time you go shopping, try looking for decaffeinated drinks and avoiding chocolate! (This is easier to get used to with practice!)

• Again, another downfall to this list is that fatty foods are known to be acid reflux causes. There are a number of reasons why these foods should be avoided and one of the main things is that they massively slow down the digestive process so food is contained within the stomach for longer. In turn this leads to acid escaping and the familiar symptoms start to bubble up.

Alongside various food groups, certain lifestyle choices are known to be acid reflux causes and included within this group is:

• Smoking

• Drinking excessively

• Eating late at night

• Wearing tight clothing around the stomach area

• Eating huge meals or having larger portions

As you can see, the acid reflux causes will very often be things that you may not have previously thought possible but generally, the causes are easy to change and therefore preventing the acid reflux itself becomes less of a problem.

Alvin Hopkinson is a leading health researcher in the area of natural remedies and acid reflux cure.

Acid reflux and chest pain can present some form of danger to a heart patient. The chest pains are quite common, some individuals are not aware that what they are suffering is no longer acid reflux and chest pains but already the onset of a heart attack.

Before going any further, let us first identify what acid reflux is and its relation to chest pain.

Acid Reflux – What Causes the Heart Burn or Chest Pains?

Acid Reflux or GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease) mainly affects a person’s esophagus. Esophagus to aptly describe it is that passage where the food passes on from the mouth to the stomach, under normal digestion processes. In some instances during the digestion process, the stomach will go into some form of regurgitation.

Regurgitation here means some food were not digested but instead will be moved back up from the stomach to the throat, passing once again the esophagus. However, the regurgitated food gets stuck in this passage causing discomfort in the form of chest pains.

As the regurgitated food remains stuck in the esophagus, the latter now becomes inflamed because some of the acid that was used during the digestion processes is now affecting the lining of the esophagus. The acid being the most harmful substance found in a regurgitated liquid is now causing the person to suffer from GERD, acid reflux or heartburn.

While suffering from acid reflux, chest pains which come as a burning sensation will be felt and can last for a couple of hours. Although in some cases, chest pains aren’t always evident in the sufferer’s condition. Still, the presence of the acid in the esophagus if left untreated or neutralized will eventually result to bleeding ulcers.

Some individuals may choose to lie down as they get to feel the weakening effect of acid reflux and chest pains. However, they should be prevented from doing so since this will only worsen his or her condition. Lying down will present an opportunity for the burning sensation to move up to the throat, leaving the person’s throat dry and parched or even tastes as if the undigested food has reached the throat.

When Heart Attacks are Mistaken for Acid Reflux Chest Pains

Some people may treat acid reflux and chest pains as dismissible and can easily be remedied by antacids. The problem now lies with the similarity between acid reflux – chest pains as against the chest pains that are onsets to a heart attack. Thus, there is the real need to know the underlying differences between these two conditions since the latter could prove to be fatal if ignored.

This could be quite tricky since both heart attacks and acid reflux, may take place right after a sumptuous meal. In fact, it is even possible to have both acid reflux and heart attack simultaneously. While experiencing acid reflux chest pains, the esophagus is now causing some nerves to impair blood flow to the heart.

How to Differentiate Acid Reflux Chest Pains from Chest Pains leading to a Heart Attack

To avoid the dangers of mistaking chest pains leading to heart attacks as mere acid reflux chest pains, persons who are prone to suffer from these ailments should take note of the following distinctions:

The burning sensation or chest pains of acid reflux usually last for 10-12 hours, which means if the chest pain you are suffering is that of a heart attack, you won’t get to last that long. The longer the chest pain in a heart attack sufferer, the more symptoms will become evident. It is a must therefore that the heart patient should be more aware of other symptoms that may arise from the chest pains. For this matter, hereunder are the immediate symptoms of a heart attack:

• Breaking into a cold sweat.

• Pain is moving from the chest to the jaw, shoulder or arms. The pain increases when effort is exerted.

• There is fatigue and shortness of breath.

• The chest pains did not respond to antacids.

• Nausea and possible vomiting

• Sufferer has become pale.

In the event that all of these symptoms are present or if within 10 to 15 minutes of taking an antacid or H2 blocker you are still suffering from heart burn or chest pain, ask someone to call 911.

Alvin Hopkinson is a leading health researcher in the area of natural remedies and acid reflux treatment.

Spitting up or acid reflux and infants is a term that not many parents may know about but is something that is very common with doctors all around the world. Generally this condition will normally only occur with the first three of a child’s life and this is the case for more than fifty percent of all new born babies.

Although the majority of cases of acid reflux and infants bear the need for medicated treatments, a minority of babies will have something which is very often referred to as severe or chronic acid reflux and will continue into their childhood. With the most part, babies and infants will have grown out of the spitting up phase by the time they have reached a year old or eighteen months of age and these babies are commonly referred to as “happy spitters”

With regards to acid reflux and infants, there are a few symptoms that you need to keep an eye out for and these are the ones that are commonly associated with the condition in youngsters:

• Bad breath

• Bad sleeping patterns, waking frequently, poor quality of sleep

• Coughing that is persistent

• Hiccups that occur more often than is deemed to be natural

• Burps that sound wet or that bring up fluid

• Arching the back when feeding

• Crying for no reason or constantly crying

• Eating small amounts of food and occasionally not eating at all

• Being rather irritable when feeding, not concentrating on feeding

• Vomiting and spitting up

If you notice that your baby has these side effects it may be time to take them to a physician or another medical professional to have them checked out. Although some babies and particularly smaller ones will have irritability from time to time and also poor sleeping patterns, it is when the symptoms are combined with the others in the list above that a problem has arose.

There are some other symptoms which you may notice with acid reflux and infants and although these are less common, they are occasionally a sign of chronic or severe acid reflux which will need to be monitored and treated accordingly. The symptoms that normally associate themselves with this are:

• Having problems while swallowing food and swallowing in general

• Losing weight or having problems with weight gain

• Sore throats that are persistent and do not respond to medication

• Problems with the respiratory system such as asthma, wheezing, bronchitis etc

• Infections of the ears and sinuses

• Drooling that is persistent and excessive

• Hoarseness with regards to voice and cries

• Periods of poor breathing or stopping breathing

Although these symptoms may seem frightening for any parent, they are all associated with acid reflux and infants and can be easily maintained as long as medication is administered and the condition is monitored by a healthcare professional. Generally these symptoms will disappear by the time the child is walking and running around but it can continue into toddler age and even older.

Alvin Hopkinson is a leading health researcher in the area of natural remedies and acid reflux cure.
