Every year millions of adults suffer the affects of gastro esophageal reflux disease or GERD for short. But what most people don’t realize is that acid reflux in children is also a very common problem. Just like an adult if a child’s GERD is left untreated a whole multitude of problems can occur, including esophageal damage, trouble breathing, larynx damage, and an increased chance of cancer of the esophagus.

The first step to diagnosing acid reflux in a child is recognizing the symptoms of this disease. One of the first signs may be a child who has difficulty eating or swallowing, complaining of pain when doing so. They may also exhibit the signs of slow or stunted growth because of a lack of nutrition. Vomiting may also be present in a child with acid reflux as well as projectile vomiting. The thing to watch for with throwing up and children who have GERD is a vomit with a green bile look to it, or an appearance like that of coffee grounds or blood. If a child has any of these types of symptoms on a consistent basis a trip to the pediatrician is in order.

The diagnosing of acid reflux in a child begins with a description of the symptoms. Most doctors will be able to make an accurate diagnosis from this alone but depending on the severity of the symptoms and the risk of complications the doctor may order some more in depth diagnostic tests be done.

The most common test is the barium x-ray image test. By drinking barium an x-ray can be taken of the upper GI tract. This gives a detailed image of the esophagus and stomach helping a doctor to make a more accurate diagnosis. Another more invasive test is an Endoscopy in which a thin probe with a light and camera on the end is snaked down the throat and into the stomach. This gives the doctor a first hand view of any damage or underlying conditions that may be causing the acid reflux. This type of test does require general anesthesia and is usually done in a hospital.

The first recommendation your pediatrician will probably make is a change in diet for your child with acid reflux. This will not only involve avoiding the known foods that are known to set of symptoms but also eating smaller meals and avoiding any foods a good 2 to 3 hours before bed. This can be hard for a child or young adolescent because many of the foods they need to avoid are the ones they like best.

When dietary changes do not have the desired effect then your child’s doctor may suggest an over the counter medication or write a prescription for a proton pump inhibitor. These drugs work by controlling how much stomach acid the body produces.

Most children who suffer from acid reflux get it when they are babies and simply outgrow it as they travel towards adulthood. Even though this is the case it is still important to have any case of acid reflux in children properly diagnosed and treated by a pediatrician. The long term complications of not getting GERD properly treated can lead to a lifetime of discomfort, pain, and possible life threatening disease.

Acid reflux is mainly caused due to irregular eating habits. As the acid passes through the stomach back into the throat a burning sensation is felt. This can be mainly felt after lying down after the meals. The acid damages the lining of the esophagus making it weak. Sometimes the food in the stomach comes back to the throat due to weak functioning of the muscles which cover the top of the esophagus. The pain caused is sometimes so intense that it can be felt in the back also.

Acid reflux is seen in children also. Even the infants can suffer from acid reflux. The symptoms vary in both. The cure and medication depends on the acuteness of the reflux. Varied cures are available for the adults and the children. The cures include natural cure, herbal cure, medication, surgeries and the use of special reflux pillows. But before going for any treatment doctor’s guidance is needed and if these treatments are taken along with making some changes in the life style, then the effect can be long lasting and quick.

Acid Reflux Cures: Out of the many cures available against acid reflux the natural and the herbal cures have proved to be more effective. But the other cures like medicines, surgeries also have their own importance and effects. Let us discuss the acid reflux cures briefly.

Medicines/Antacid: Largely available in the market these have a faster effect on the reflux but along with the relief they also bring along some side effect. Before starting with these cures it is important to seek advice from a good doctor.

Herbal and natural cure: The most preferred and effective treatment against acid reflux. This cure includes the remedies with widely available herbs and spices. Different spices like cinnamon, ginger, garlic etc with their different medicinal properties are used for curing the reflux. Another form of natural cure is the apple or the apple cider vinegar. This vinegar is made from apple juice and is very good for digestion.

Surgeries: Surgeries have proved to have a long time effect against the reflux. It is done to tighten the loose valve which has become weak due to the acid oozing up in the throat. Minimum time needed for the surgery is 30 min approximately. After the surgery the patient can go home in a day or two. However the surgery may have to be repeated for retightening of the valve.

Acid Reflux Pillow: These special types of pillows are specially designed for the patients of this reflux. The structure of the pillow is such that it avoids the acid to come back to the throat while person is in sleeping position. This pillow comfortably supports the upper body portion by keeping the head elevated in a certain angle. You can also use the normal regular pillow along with this reflux pillow.

If the above cures are combined with proper and balanced eating habits the effects of both of these can be felt faster and quicker and can be long lasting.

Are you having a hard time swallowing? Do you also feel a prickly and warm sensation deep down your throat? Are you feeling sick as if the food that you just ate wants to climb back up and force itself to come out? Then, you must be experiencing Acid Reflux.

Those things exactly pertain to the symptoms of Acid Reflux, or Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) in medical terms. What happens here is that the liquid matter in your stomach go up and damage the linings of your esophagus because of their high acidity. This is caused by the malfunctioning or the involuntary relaxation of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), which then allows the said rising of your stomach’s contents. Certain foods that are rich in caffeine and filled with fat are said to trigger this abnormality because they induce the loosening up of the LES, while spicy and acidic foods such as hot sauce and lemonade add to the high acid level of the stomach.

Some people may believe that only adults can experience this irregularity in the digestive system, but the truth is that children and even infants can be prone to the disease. Here are some of the most perceptible symptoms of Acid Reflux that you have to look out for in you and your children:

* Heartburn is characterized by a burning feeling in the esophagus, and this is usually linked to the regurgitation of the acids from the stomach. The pain that it produces are often focused on the chest, but it can spread out and affect the jaw and the neck, especially the throat. This can also lead to a cough and other kinds of aberrant pains in that area. So the next time that you feel like your throat is itchy, it may not just be a case of a sore throat.

* In children, the most common symptoms of Acid Reflux are extreme salivation, recurring vomiting, coughing, forced spitting out, and other problems involving the respiratory system. Some other usual signs include bad breath, frequent burping and hiccups, and an excessively drooling nose. They can also refuse to eat food because they feel pain in their throats or they have a hard time swallowing what you feed them. Children, especially babies, when laid down flat, often cry when they feel something painful but cannot explain what it is, so parents are advised to be more sensitive regarding this matter.

These symptoms are usually easy to discern because of their characteristics, but sometimes, we find it hard to put away our pride to tell others that something is wrong with us and that we need help. This attitude should be changed for good because GERD is not a simple abnormality that can be treated with simple measures. Immediate response is always needed in such incidents. And now that information about the symptoms of Acid Reflux are easily accessible, it is now our responsibility to protect ourselves and the people that we care about from this rampant disease.

Apples and Acid Reflux go together. Let’s see how…

Acid reflux can worsen if not taken care of at the proper/ right time. Adults as well as the infants are seen suffering from acid reflux. In infants and children it gradually lessens with the age but in some cases it can still prevail even when they grow up. In adults as well as in infants the reflux problem can become life long. A proper doctor should be consulted and a proper treatment should be taken.

The doctor may prescribe the medicine depending on the severity of the reflux.

There are various types of cure against acid reflux. There are herbal cures, medicines and many more. The best option for getting a life long effect against this reflux is surgery. Leaving the herbal and the natural cures the medicines have a side effect on the patients

So people are seen choosing the best herbal and the natural cures. These cures are home remedies and are believed to be the most effective among all. Some of the cures are just out of the “kitchen remedies”.One of such remedies is the Apple or the apple cider vinegar. Apple has it own health qualities.

Due to its rich properties it is also good for the skin and eyes. It is also the most liked fruit and eaten by most health conscious people. Moreover an apple can be consumed by small children also. So the children suffering from acid reflux can eat this fruit either in slices, grated or fresh juice. Another effective remedy is the Apple cider vinegar. It is made by crushing the apples and taking the juice out .It is a common ingredient found in the kitchens. It is also available in capsule form. Apple cider vinegar can be consumed under the guidance of a doctor. Normally, it can be consumed in small quantities. Because of its high acidic levels it should not be consumed in large quantities

It can also be added to certain recipes. It can be consumed by people suffering from blood disorders, bone problems, breathing problems, kidney stone patients, throat problems and many more

It is rich in minerals and vitamins also. It also improves the health of the skin. This vinegar can also be made at home. The pills may not contain the same ingredients as that of the liquid form. Hence they may prove to be less effective against the reflux. The vinegar should be kept away from direct sunlight and should be kept in a cool place and does not need to be kept in the refrigerator .

It can also be consumed by pregnant women as it flushes away the unwanted ingredients from the body. It should be consumed by mixing it in any water or any fruit juice rather than taking it directly. It has to be taken two times a day, in the morning half an hour before eating anything and half an hour after eating the dinner. This can be consumed by all people.

Apple or the apple cider vinegar is the best natural cure for Acid Reflux.

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a more serious form of gastroesophageal reflux (GER), which is common. Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease is defined as chronic symptoms or mucosal damage produced by the abnormal reflux in the esophagus. GER is also called acid reflux or acid regurgitation, because digestive juices called acids rise up with the food. Gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD, affects at least an estimated 5% to 7% of the global population – men, women, and children. The main symptom of GERD in adults is frequent heartburn, also called acid indigestion.

Burning-type pain in the lower region of the mid-chest, behind the bosom ivory, and in the mid-abdomen. Most children under 12 years with GERD, and some adults, have GERD without heartburn. Anatomical abnormalities such as a hiatal hernia may too add to GERD. A hiatal hernia occurs when the upper region of the abdomen and the LES go above the diaphragm, the muscle fence that separates the abdomen from the chest. Normally, the diaphragm helps the LES hold acidic from rising upward into the esophagus. When a hiatal hernia is existing, acid reflux can happen more well. A hiatal hernia can happen in folk of any age.

Anti-reflux operations may assist a tiny amount of patients who have relentless symptoms despite medical handling. One of the simplest treatments for GERD is referred to as life-style changes, a combination of several changes in habit, especially related to eating. There are too original therapies that can be performed through an endoscope for reflux. Certain foods are known to cut the force in the lower esophageal sphincter and thereby encourage reflux. These foods should be avoided and include chocolate, peppermint, alcohol, and caffeinated drinks. Fatty foods and smoking too cut the force in the sphincter and encourage reflux.

Gastroesophageal Reflux Treatment and Prevention Tips

1. If you smoke, stop.

2. Lose weight if needed.

3. Eat small, frequent meals.

4. Wear loose-fitting clothes.

5. Avoid lying down for 3 hours after a meal.

6. Avoid foods and activities that worsen symptoms.

7. Prokinetics help strengthen the LES and make the stomach empty faster.

8. Antacids, such as Alka-Seltzer and Riopan recommended to relieve heartburn.

The gastroesophageal reflux disease named GERD can be found at the level of esophagus, which becomes irritated or inflamed because of acid backing up from the stomach. The tube stretching from the throat to the stomach is called esophagus which is traveled by the food after we eat.

The hydrochloric acid is produced by the stomach and helps in the food digestion. The stomach presents a lining which resists to the corrosion of this acid.At the level of the stomach exists cells which are protected by a mucus.Unfortunately, the lining of the esophagus is not so resistant to fight with the acid of the stomach. The sensation of acid burning the esophagus is associated with the term heartburn, which is not accidental and it is given by its position, because the esophagus lies just behind the heart. The lower esophageal sphincter is composed by a ring of muscle at the bottom. This one prevents the reflux of the acid.

The food can pas slower by the sphincter action which relaxes during swallowing. The sphincter relaxation is made up by the GERD presence, which allows stomach to relax between swallows. Many people in the United States suffers by GERD, which is experienced weekly or daily by 10% of the adult population.Children and infants are also GERD.An unpleasant thing consists in the fact that the gastroesophageal reflux is not well known yet.The reflux can be worse by unusual lifestyle which may contribute to the appearance of several damaging factors. So the lifestyle of a person is influenced in worse by using alcohol or cigarettes, and by the obesity and poor posture.

There are some medications which can relax the lower esophageal sphincter like calcium blockers, theophylline (Tedral, Hydrophed, Marax, Bronchial, Quibron), nitrates, antihistamines.Consuming fatty and fried foods, chocolate, garlic and onions, drinking with caffeine, acid foods such as citrus fruits and tomatoes, spicy food, mint flavorings affects in a bad way the reflux.Disease like hiatal hernia, pregnancy, diabetes, rapid weight gain make the upper part of the stomach protrudes up above the diaphragm. This diaphragm acts as an additional barrier keeping the acid from backing up into the esophagus.

A hiatal hernia helps the acid to back up.It can be caused by persistent coughing, vomiting, straining, or sudden physical exertion.Beneath these factors obesity and pregnancy can badly damage the reflux. At people older than 50 year hiatal hernia is common.Usualy hiatal hernia doesn’t need treatment, but in case when the hernia is twisted surgery may be required.

The most common symptom of GERD is a persistent heartburn. The burning pain can be localized in the center of the chest, just behind the breastbone. In most cases the pain becomes in the upper abdomen and goes up to the neck. The duration of a pain is about two hours. The heartburn is worse after eating.Sometimes lying down may harm worse.Heartburn can be associated with the acid indigestion, but it is not necessary that everyone with GERD to get heartburn.GERD includes other symptoms like: regurgitation of bitter acid up into the throat while sleeping or bending over, bitter taste in the mouth, persistent dry cough, feeling of tightness in the throat if a piece of food is stack there, wheezing. For children the most common symptoms are vomiting, coughing and respiratory problems.

So we must pay attention to what we eat and to keep ourselves away from a disastrous lifestyle for avoiding such kind of problems.

For more resources about acid reflux or especially about acid reflux treatment please click this link http://www.acid-reflux-info-guide.com/acid-reflux-treatment.htm

An Herbal Remedy for Acid Reflux Instead of Ant-Acid Pills

An Herbal Remedy for Acid Reflux makes sense so you do not have to live with the discomfort. The thought of not having to worry about the side effects of taking another medication will certainly ease your mind.

Does your coffee cause you pain? Are you frustrated when dining with friends ends in worry instead of relaxed conversation? Do you take antacids with you wherever you go? Start using an herbal remedy for acid reflux.

Acid reflux occurs when the acid content of the stomach makes its way back into the esophagus. A burning sensation and even a bitter taste are experienced by heartburn sufferers. If you are suffering more than twice a week you may have acid reflux disease – also known as GERD.

Not all acid reflux is caused by GERD (Gastroesophageal reflux disease). Occasionally it

can be caused by a variety of factors but if you have regular episodes there are things you can do to help. An herbal remedy for acid reflux restores what you lack.

Antacids can cause more pain. Antacids can relieve the pain of occasional heartburn, but because they are designed to neutralize the acids in your stomach they can force the stomach to create MORE acid – a cycle called ‘acid rebound’. Some medications can also bring on diarrhea or constipation or even increase the risk of food poisoning by inhibiting the maturation of good bacteria.

Watch out for trigger foods such as caffeine, alcohol, citrus, chocolate, minty, spicy or

tomato-based foods as well as fatty or fried foods, onions or garlic.

It should be noted that pregnant women, children, overweight individuals and smokers are all more likely candidates for acid reflux.

Young babies have immature digestive systems. National Digestive Diseases (NDDIC) says that most children outgrow GERD by the time they are one year old. However, because the symptoms are throbbing precautions like frequent burping and keeping the infant upright for 30 minutes after digesting can reduce the occurrence.

Older children may have to take similar precautions in diet and activity as adults. You should always consult your physician when you suspect GERD to avoid future complications.

If you suspect GERD it is important to contact your physician as there can be harmful side effects of persistent heartburn including scaring of the esophagus, asthma, erosion of the teeth and even increased risk of esophageal cancer. Frequent, persistent heartburn can also be a symptom of other serious conditions and should be checked on by a professional.

Widely used heartburn and ulcer drugs such as Nexium, Pepcid and Prilosec can make

people more susceptible to pneumonia, probably because they reduce germ-killing stomach acid, Dutch researchers found this in a study of more than 300,000 patients.

Some natural products such as orange peel extract are being researched for their abilities to curb the problem.

In closing an herbal remedy for acid reflux makes sense. Good quality yogurt and acidophilus/bifodophilus capsules with a high bacterial count can make all the difference in the world. People that have used Apple Cider Vinegar have reported relief from acid reflux. Chamomile and Ginger are also herbs that can soothe you, and provide the herbal remedy for acid reflux.

Resources

Heartspring

Earth Clinic

Acid reflux is a disease characterized by the abnormal reflux or rise of gastric contents from the stomach into the esophagus resulting in chronic symptoms and mucosal damage. So it occurs when one of the two closures or “sphincters” in the esophagus fail to remain sealed after food or liquid intake and the contents get spilled into your larynx and pharynx instead of in your stomach.

Causes of acid reflux

Acid reflux is often caused by temporary or permanent alterations in the lining that actually separates the esophagus from the stomach. It is the ineffectiveness of the lower esophageal sphincter [LES] or the temporary LES relaxation connected to hiatus hernia that causes severe acid reflux. In adults, the most common symptom of acid reflux is acute heartburning sensation caused by acid resting in the esophagus. The painful sensation continues behind the sternum or breastbone. Another common symptom of acid reflux is esophagitis, which means that the person suffers an inflammation of the lining of esophagus. This simultaneously causes swallowing difficulties and chronic chest pains.

The cause of acid reflux in infants and children is their undeveloped digestive system. So the best way to avoid acid reflux in children is taking them to the doctor for immediate and fast medication.

Symptoms of acid reflux

Sometimes acid reflux is also characterized by rapid coughing, persistent pains in the ears, sinusitis, hoarseness or even complete change in the voice. When you are suffering from acid reflux, you should immediately visit the doctor for medication. Do not neglect as severe acid-reflux may lead to formation of a stricture or ulcers in your esophagus. Often persons suffering from acid reflux diseases can experience tasting something sour or salty behind the throat. However, other less common symptoms of acid reflux includes chest pain, swallowing, halitosis or bad breath, repeated throat clearing and water brash [hyper-secretion of saliva].

Instant remedies of acid reflux

To provide immediate relief to adults in case of acid reflux, you can try out with some homemade remedies. Instead of taking tea, you can have tea mixed with aniseed, peppermint, honey and lavender. However, you should have 8 oz in the morning and 8 oz in the evening for immediate relief.

Following is a brief account of other immediate home remedies

1) Have digestive enzymes containing Betain, pepsin or HCl components with each meal.

2) Papaya digestive enzymes, which contain papain, are also excellent dosage used for protein digestion.

3) Have pineapple as it supports digestion, reduces acidity effectively and supports wound healing.

4) Sprinkle cinnamon on your bread and have it to reduce acidity.

5) Eat organic grapefruits that are dried to remedy excess acid reflux.

6) Have romaine lettuce that will help to eliminate acid reflux or severe heartburn conditions.

7) A daily mixture of nutmeg, mace and slippery elm reduces indigestion, heartburn, acid reflux, stomach gas, and vomiting and severe heartburn.

Treat acid reflux effectively to reduce any further complications in your stomach.

Acid reflux symptoms are often misread, or thought to be something else. Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is another name for acid reflux. GERD is are result of the acid in the stomach backing up and causing irritation and inflammation in the esophagus. Acid reflux symptoms can seem like a heart attack, asthma attack, or other more serious complication. Many unnecessary hospital visits are a result of people misdiagnosing symptoms of GERD.

Heartburn

The most common acid reflux symptom is heartburn. Heartburn is named because it feels like your chest is burning. Heartburn can also be felt in the area of the neck and throat. Somebody who has never experienced heart disease can feel as if they are experiencing a heart attack. Heartburn can be very painful but relief can typically be found with antacids and light exercise. It is always better to be safe. If you are unsure if the burning in your chest is heartburn it is best to seek medical attention.

Coughing and Wheezing

Coughing and wheezing that is caused by GERD can be mistaken for asthma or bronchitis. When these symptoms are caused by acid reflux it is because the acid in the stomach is forced into and partially block the airways. This can cause the feeling of being short of breath or the need to cough to force the acid out. Many people pass these acid reflux symptoms off as being caused by smoking. While smoking can certainly cause similar symptoms, they are usually more persistent and don’t resolve themselves. These symptoms can be a sign of underlying conditions, even if they go away and come back later. They should be discussed with a physician.

Children with Acid Reflux Symptoms

Acid reflux disease can cause some symptoms in children that will seem flu-like. Children can experience vomiting and coughing, along with other respiratory symptoms. Vomiting can happen because a child is small and the acid being forced up has nowhere to go but out. Excessive vomiting should be taken seriously as this could cause dehydration in children. Be sure to let your pediatrician know exactly what is going on if your child exhibits symptoms of GERD. It is a good idea to keep a journal of what your child consumes, activities, and symptoms to determine if there is a correlation between them. Finding the trigger of a child’s acid reflux symptoms will make treatment much easier.

Older Adults with GERD

GERD in older adults can cause symptoms that make them feel as if they are choking. This can be especially frightening for an older person because they may not have the strength to cough it up or there might be nobody around to ask for help. Lying down or bending can worsen these symptoms. There are prescription medications that can be helpful to people who experience this.

Acid reflux symptoms can be caused by other medical problems and should never be ignored. Often a treatment plan that includes lifestyle changes can be most beneficial. If you are experiencing trouble with reflux try to cut out foods that may be the source of your symptoms. Quit smoking and stay away from alcohol as these can be major contributors to symptoms of GERD. As always, work with your physician to find the best treatment for acid reflux symptoms.

Based on the number of health related issues that we have in todays society, it is very important that we take the time to learn about some of the health conditions that are threatening our nation today. Gastroesophagel Reflux Disease which is often referred to as GERD, is actually defined to be the problem when there is chronic symptoms or either mucosal damage present that is produced by abnormal reflux which consists of gastric contents in the esophagus.

Most of the time when you hear of someone having acid reflux it is caused by a transient or other permanent changes that take place in the barrier that is located between the stomach and the esophagus. There are many different factors that could cause acid reflux such as incompetence of the LES which stands for the lower esophageal sphincter as well as transient lower esophageal sphincter relaxation. Acid Reflux can also be caused by impaired expulsion of the gastric reflux which comes from the esophagus not to mention a hiatal hernia as well.

When you are learning the basics of acid reflux, you want to make sure that you take a look at the symptoms of acid reflux that can show as a sign that you or your children may need to seek medical help. First lets start with the symptoms of acid reflux that are present in adults. In adults, heartburn is known to be the most common symptom when there is acid present in the esophagus. The heart burn is also known to be characterized by what is known as a burning discomfort normally behind the breast bone which is also known as the sternum.

The findings that are included in the GERD actually include esophagitis as well as inflammatory changes that take place in the mucosa or esophageal lining. There are also findings of strictures which are when you have a difficult time swallowing as well as chronic chest pain. In children, GERD can be very difficult to detect especially in infants. In children you will also find that the symptoms are also different, children normally have symptoms like vomiting and spitting up as well as coughing and respiratory problems.

If you think that your child may be suffering for acid reflux, you need to make sure that you watch out for other symptoms as well such as inconsolable crying and bad breath accompanied by refusing food and loss of weight or failure to gain weight. The bottom line here is if you think that your child is suffering from acid reflux, you need to seek medical attention so that you can get them on medication to ease the discomfort that they are having.

There are many different approaches to acid reflux treatment because of the fact that certain foods along with your lifestyle can actually promote acid reflux. One step to acid reflux treatment would be to limit your consumption of coffee as well as alcohol and large amounts of vitamin C because of the fact that they are known to stimulate gastric acid secretion. You can also limit your consumption of foods that have high levels of fats as part of your acid reflux treatment and you can also avoid smoking because these two things are known to reduce the lower esophageal sphincter competence. Other ways that you can approach an acid reflux treatment is to avoid eating before you go to bed and avoid having large meals also.
