Every year millions of adults suffer the affects of gastro esophageal reflux disease or GERD for short. But what most people don’t realize is that acid reflux in children is also a very common problem. Just like an adult if a child’s GERD is left untreated a whole multitude of problems can occur, including esophageal damage, trouble breathing, larynx damage, and an increased chance of cancer of the esophagus.

The first step to diagnosing acid reflux in a child is recognizing the symptoms of this disease. One of the first signs may be a child who has difficulty eating or swallowing, complaining of pain when doing so. They may also exhibit the signs of slow or stunted growth because of a lack of nutrition. Vomiting may also be present in a child with acid reflux as well as projectile vomiting. The thing to watch for with throwing up and children who have GERD is a vomit with a green bile look to it, or an appearance like that of coffee grounds or blood. If a child has any of these types of symptoms on a consistent basis a trip to the pediatrician is in order.

The diagnosing of acid reflux in a child begins with a description of the symptoms. Most doctors will be able to make an accurate diagnosis from this alone but depending on the severity of the symptoms and the risk of complications the doctor may order some more in depth diagnostic tests be done.

The most common test is the barium x-ray image test. By drinking barium an x-ray can be taken of the upper GI tract. This gives a detailed image of the esophagus and stomach helping a doctor to make a more accurate diagnosis. Another more invasive test is an Endoscopy in which a thin probe with a light and camera on the end is snaked down the throat and into the stomach. This gives the doctor a first hand view of any damage or underlying conditions that may be causing the acid reflux. This type of test does require general anesthesia and is usually done in a hospital.

The first recommendation your pediatrician will probably make is a change in diet for your child with acid reflux. This will not only involve avoiding the known foods that are known to set of symptoms but also eating smaller meals and avoiding any foods a good 2 to 3 hours before bed. This can be hard for a child or young adolescent because many of the foods they need to avoid are the ones they like best.

When dietary changes do not have the desired effect then your child’s doctor may suggest an over the counter medication or write a prescription for a proton pump inhibitor. These drugs work by controlling how much stomach acid the body produces.

Most children who suffer from acid reflux get it when they are babies and simply outgrow it as they travel towards adulthood. Even though this is the case it is still important to have any case of acid reflux in children properly diagnosed and treated by a pediatrician. The long term complications of not getting GERD properly treated can lead to a lifetime of discomfort, pain, and possible life threatening disease.

Acid reflux or GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) occurs when the liquid that is in the stomach backs up into the esophagus. This is usually a condition which persists throughout the life of the individual. Because the acid backs up into the esophagus, the esophagus may be damaged.

Acid reflux (GERD) can have many symptoms

Malfunction of Lower Esophageal Sphincter (LES) Muscle

The action of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) may be one cause. The esophagus connects to the stomach. There is a muscle ring that goes around the end of the esophagus at the point where it meets the stomach. This is the LES. When we eat or drink the LES allows the food to pass into the stomach and then the muscle ring closes so the food does not reflux. People with acid reflux (GERD) may have abnormalities with their LES. The LES may have a weak contraction so there is a very good chance of reflux. Or, the LES may be too relaxed. The longer the LES is open (relaxed) reflux can easily occur. Dietary substances, drugs, and nervous system factors can deteriorate it and impair its function.

Hiatal Hemia

Another cause of GERD is a hiatal hernia. Some people with acid reflux have hiatal hernias and some do not. Hiatal hernias are not a pre-requisite for acid reflux, but a large amount of people with acid reflux DO have hiatal hernias. A hiatal hernia disrupts the location of the LES. The LES should be on a level with the diaphragm but due to the hiatal hernia the LES is pushed up and lies in the chest. This is a problem because the diaphragm is a large part of helping the LES to prevent reflux. Now the pressure of both the LES and diaphragm are not working as a strong unit. The hiatal hernia contributes to the reflux because of the decreased pressure.

Acid reflux can also be caused by a hiatal hernia due to the hernial sac. The location of the sac is near the esophagus. Acid gets trapped in the sac. Because the sac is so close to the esophagus, when the LES relaxes, it is easy to reflux.

The hiatal hernia can lead to acid reflux in a third way. Normally the esophagus connects to the stomach at an angle creating a flap of tissue. The hiatal hernia leads to the flap becoming warped and therefore it is useless to stop reflux.

People with reflux have a problem with the contraction of the esophageal muscles when they swallow. This is an issue because the contraction pushes all of the items in the esophagus into the stomach. If there is not a good contraction then the acid does not get pushed back and remains in the esophagus. Smoking disturbs the clearing of the esophagus too. It takes about six hours from the last cigarette you smoke for the effect on the esophagus to wear off.

Acid reflux is most common after meals. It is always better to be vertical so gravity can help the acid move down into the stomach. Large meals are not recommended for people with acid reflux.

There are many different reasons people may have acid reflux. Learning the cause may help in your quest to relieve some of the discomfort of reflux.

Burping

It is important to understand that gas in the stomach or burping is a common occurrence for most individuals. The gas in the stomach can be caused by swallowing air or by eating certain types of food. Therefore, it is important to distinguish between non-acid reflux burping versus burping with reflux.

Associated burping with acid reflux is caused when the acid in a person’s stomach travels backwards into the esophagus. This in turn causes a burning feeling in the chest area. If this excess acid travels into the mouth it is then expelled from the body in gaseous form. This is the way to detect whether an individual’s burping is normal or associated with reflux.

Additionally, the gas that is released through this process can be extremely strong and very bad in odor. Often, an individual who is experiencing this symptom with acid reflux becomes accustomed to the process and becomes desensitized to the extreme odor that this condition can create.

It is well known by all of us that babies do spit up. For that, in the last years pediatricians have prescribed acid-suppressing drugs such as Prilosec and Zantac for babies with acid reflux. The most disappointing news is that no one can prove that these drugs are efficient.

Many studies were done in order to prove the efficiency of the mentioned drugs. A doctor called Ajay Kaul, which is a pediatric gastroenterologist in Cincinnati, tested 30 babies that were under 1 year old. 10 out of the 30 infants tested were dosed with a proton-pump inhibitor such as Prilosec, other 10 were treated with a H2 blocker like Zantac and the rest of the babies were untreated. Using a small wireless sensor that was introduced into the esophagus through the nose our specialist found out that the drugs did not reduce significantly the number of the spit-up incidents. His conclusion was that for the doses that he prescribed there was no noticeable difference between the treated and the untreated babies.

His research proved what many pediatric gastroenterologists have suspected.

Other specialists agreed with the fact that a very small percentage of babies with acid reflux will later develop problems such as respiratory ailments including asthma. More than that, specialists still argue about whether the acid reflux is the cause for later respiratory ailments or not.

It is also good to know the specialists opinion that says that acid reflux is normal for the vast majority of children and it does not require medication.

A common advice for parents is not to treat their children with medications. They should also know that babies reflux and they are going to outgrow it. A doctor from the SUNNY medical school in Buffalo called Robert Baker observed that nowadays parents often treat their children with medication. He says that parents should know that more that 50 percent of the children that have not passed the age of three months do spit at least once a day and 5 percent of the children between 10 and 12 months do the same thing. The question that rises know is whether the treatment will make children less irritable or the action will be seen only in parents’ eyes.

After the research that proved no effect of the medication in young babies with acid reflux, the same doctor began another study. This time he chooses a number of 100 subjects but the results were similar.

Visit it if you are looking for great information on natural cures for acid reflux, acid reflux diet, acid reflux treatment and many more.

Acid reflux is mainly caused due to irregular eating habits. As the acid passes through the stomach back into the throat a burning sensation is felt. This can be mainly felt after lying down after the meals. The acid damages the lining of the esophagus making it weak. Sometimes the food in the stomach comes back to the throat due to weak functioning of the muscles which cover the top of the esophagus. The pain caused is sometimes so intense that it can be felt in the back also.

Acid reflux is seen in children also. Even the infants can suffer from acid reflux. The symptoms vary in both. The cure and medication depends on the acuteness of the reflux. Varied cures are available for the adults and the children. The cures include natural cure, herbal cure, medication, surgeries and the use of special reflux pillows. But before going for any treatment doctor’s guidance is needed and if these treatments are taken along with making some changes in the life style, then the effect can be long lasting and quick.

Acid Reflux Cures: Out of the many cures available against acid reflux the natural and the herbal cures have proved to be more effective. But the other cures like medicines, surgeries also have their own importance and effects. Let us discuss the acid reflux cures briefly.

Medicines/Antacid: Largely available in the market these have a faster effect on the reflux but along with the relief they also bring along some side effect. Before starting with these cures it is important to seek advice from a good doctor.

Herbal and natural cure: The most preferred and effective treatment against acid reflux. This cure includes the remedies with widely available herbs and spices. Different spices like cinnamon, ginger, garlic etc with their different medicinal properties are used for curing the reflux. Another form of natural cure is the apple or the apple cider vinegar. This vinegar is made from apple juice and is very good for digestion.

Surgeries: Surgeries have proved to have a long time effect against the reflux. It is done to tighten the loose valve which has become weak due to the acid oozing up in the throat. Minimum time needed for the surgery is 30 min approximately. After the surgery the patient can go home in a day or two. However the surgery may have to be repeated for retightening of the valve.

Acid Reflux Pillow: These special types of pillows are specially designed for the patients of this reflux. The structure of the pillow is such that it avoids the acid to come back to the throat while person is in sleeping position. This pillow comfortably supports the upper body portion by keeping the head elevated in a certain angle. You can also use the normal regular pillow along with this reflux pillow.

If the above cures are combined with proper and balanced eating habits the effects of both of these can be felt faster and quicker and can be long lasting.

In the last few months, I have been reading hundreds of testimonials from my acid reflux customers. And one thing stuck out to me, the link between curing acid reflux and losing weight. I have never even considered this! And after reviewing some hundred + testimonials, I noticed how so many of my ex-acid reflux customers also noted how they have lost 5-25 pounds from our natural treatment of acid reflux!

And finally recently, I was reading the morning newspaper and what do I see? “Acid Reflux and Fat go Hand in Hand” and I immediately had the epiphany that I might be on to something! I jotted on my palm pilot, “Cure Heartburn and Lose Weight” and immediately went to our Naturally Treat Acid Reflux report. And guess what I find? An obvious connection between losing weight and to naturally treat acid reflux!

But What is Acid Reflux?

The stomach contains acids! In fact, the stomach acids are just as acidic as car battery acid. The function of this potent acid is to help you digest the food. Your stomach has no problem handing this due to its thick lining. However, the problem arises when the stomach acid backs up into your esophagus. When this happens it is clinically labeled heartburn. When this happens for an extended period, it is called acid reflux or GERD (Gastro-esophageal reflux disease).

Being Overweight and Acid Reflux

A recent Italian research study has reported the conclusive connection between being overweight and suffering from acid reflux. The study documented how overweight patients (especially women) run a greater risk of hospitalization of GERD (acid reflux). Unfortunately, as more and more people struggle with managing their weight; acid reflux hospitalization has been sky-rocketing in the past 10 years.

But here is the good news!

Naturally Cure Acid Reflux, Lose Weight and Heighten Sex Drive

Are you overweight and wish you could shed a 10+ pounds in the next couple months?

Do you wish you had the sex drive you had 20 years ago?

Are you tired of worrying about heartburn every time you eat your favorite dish?

If you answered ‘yes’ to any of these questions, what you read in the next couple minutes might be the news you’ve always wanted to hear!

Before, I tell you why you should naturally treat acid reflux; I would like to tell you why you shouldn’t use prescription drugs to treat acid reflux. If you have ever heard the word ‘gastrin’, you know that prescription drugs increase your bodily production of this cancer-causing hormone. That is why the prescription drug has the warning of “Do not exceed 4-8 weeks of use”. Unfortunately, your doctor will never tell you of this part of your ‘helpful’ prescription drug.

But you have a simpler and more effective option!

How Your Diet is Everything!

As being overweight is the cause of acid reflux. Losing weight with water-soluble fiber foods can also be the cure to acid reflux. And an added bonus, losing weight is extremely conducive with increasing your sex drive.

You can naturally cure acid reflux, lose weight and heighten your sex drive with a few simple acid reflux remedies. Why? Because your diet is everything you need to cure acid reflux. In fact, these 5 simple remedies have helped my over-one thousand acid reflux customers cure acid reflux.

1.	Eat meals that are about the size of your clutched fist! You should eat about 5 times per day! This will allow your metabolism and esophageal sphincter to work more efficiently.

2.	Avoid lying down after meals for 3 hours. Your esophageal sphincter will work more properly and your metabolism will burn more calories throughout the day.

3.	Eat some water-soluble fiber! In other words, eat raw, fresh fruits and vegetables which are easily digested by your body. You will notice the benefits in days!

4.	Stay from acidic and carbonated drinks! Take fast from alcoholic and carbonated drinks (soft drinks). Your esophagus will thank you and you could shed up to 20 pounds in one year!

5.	Apples! A simple apple will cure any acid reflux flare-up and are perfect for healthy treat for a sweet tooth.

Are you interested in a step-by-step guaranteed natural acid reflux treatment? Are you tired of paying a few hundred dollars for a hospital visit and over-priced medication? Are you ready to finally be pro-active about your health? If you are ready… take a moment to visit Naturally Treat Acid Reflux website and our no-risk guarantee!

Acid reflux or GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux) is a medical term used to describe a condition where food and stomach acid back up into the esophagus. At the bottom of the esophagus is a ring of muscles called the lower esophageal sphincter (LES). The LES opens and closes to allow food to enter the stomach. After meals, the LES opens to release gas. However, more than just gas may escape. Stomach contents may flow back into the esophagus and out the mouth. What parents see is the infant spitting up, vomiting can also occur.

Acid reflux can occur during or after a feeding. It can also occur when babies cough or cry as well. Acid reflux occurs in the first three months of age in more than half of all infants. It is quite common and is generally called ’spitting up’. However, most babies do not need treatment. Acid reflux symptoms usually disappear between 12 to 18 months of age. For a very small number of babies the symptoms can be quite severe. In these cases, medical treatment is required.

Common acid reflux symptoms in infants:

• frequent coughing

• frequent hiccups

• wet burps

• bad breath

• frequent spitting up

• irritable while feeding

• frequent waking

• arching back while feeding

• constant or sudden crying

• eating small amounts of food or refusing food

Less common acid reflux symptoms in infants:

• excessive drooling

• frequent sinus or ear infections

• poor weight gain or weight loss

• frequent sore throat

• trouble swallowing

• asthma, pneumonia, bronchitis, wheezing

Sometimes your doctor may make a diagnosis of acid reflux based on a parent’s description of symptoms and feeding history and a physical exam even if your baby is healthy and growing well. If your baby’s doctor suspects a more serious condition, such as GERD they may order more tests. These tests may include esophageal pH monitoring which measures the acidity in your baby’s esophagus. Another test is an Upper endoscopy. This is where a tube with a camera lens and light is inserted through the baby’s mouth and into the esophagus and stomach. The doctor uses this procedure to see if there is a narrowing or inflammation in the esophagus.

For most babies, acid reflux will disappear during the first year of life. It is extremely important to discuss the treatment options with your baby’s doctor before beginning any treatment method, especially before using any over-the-counter medicine.

When acid reflux becomes a regular part of life, the sufferer is commonly advised to change his or her diet. Try to avoid citrus, Try to avoid acids. See if changes make it better. So you try. You experiment. And all the time, you’re wishing there were acid reflux cure recipes.

You finally go looking for such, and you find that there are cookbooks that focus on eating to avoid acid reflux. The trouble is that neither you nor your doctor can say for sure that your current diet is the problem. You hate to put out money for an acid reflux cookbook only to learn that your acid reflux stems from another cause. You’d like to find someone that inserts one little word in the phrase acid reflux cure recipes.

Acid reflux FREE cure recipes!

If you could just find acid reflux free cure recipes, you would try them. If it turned out that they did help, you wouldn’t mind investing in one or two good acid reflux recipe cookbooks.

The author can’t take space here to give you a collection of acid reflux free cure recipes, but let me contribute to your search.

Acid Reflux Free Cure Recipes

Acid reflux free cure recipes have three things in common.

1. They eliminate or reduce portions of those foods that are typically difficult to digest.

2. They include or increase portions of those foods that are known to aid in digestion.

3. They are FREE!

Orange juice, for example, is acidic. Many people claim that it increases acid reflux. So replace breakfast orange juice with a ripe banana, which is easy to digest. Or opt for an apple.

Brownies and donuts are considered foods to be avoided by acid reflux sufferers. They tend to sit, undigested, in the stomach. Choose an easily digested dessert such as a fat free cookie or jelly beans.

Acid Reflux Recipe Ideas

Here are a handful of ideas for acid reflux recipes.

1. Waldorf salad, made with ripe, healthy apples, nuts, and raisins, is a good acid reflux cure recipe. Use any traditional Waldorf salad recipe, but substitute low-fat mayonnaise and sour cream. You will have a great-tasting salad that contains no recognized acid reflux trigger foods.

2. Beef stew is another great acid reflux cure recipe. Use any beef stew recipe you like, omitting the onions. Cut the fat from the beef. If the stew seems to trigger acid reflux, eat a smaller portion next time.

3. Gingerbread is a marvelous dessert for acid reflux sufferers. Find a recipe that uses canned pumpkin and wheat germ. Make it with unsweetened applesauce and low-fat buttermilk. Then resist the temptation to mound whipped cream on top of it! Try a low-fat imitation whip instead.

4. Roast turkey breast is a good main course. Cranberries should be fine with it. Serve the potato baked instead of mashed.

5. Lowly meatloaf is thought to have no specific acid reflux triggers.

6. Spaghetti may cause acid reflux in some. You can reduce the possibilities by beginning with acid-free tomato sauce. Omit garlic and onion from your sauce, and try using more basil and less oregano. There are a number of Italian spices that are great in spaghetti sauce. Try fennel with basil.

7. Cheesecake, too, can be an acid reflux cure recipe. Make it with reduced fat or no-fat cheeses. Use egg whites and/or egg substitute.

While trying your acid reflux free cure recipes, learn what the actual cause of acid reflux is. You may be surprised to know that it is a muscular problem. There may be things you can do other than alter your diet.

CAUTION: The information presented here is for educational purposes only. If you have ongoing acid reflux problems, please see your physician for advice.

Millions of people are bothered by acid reflux disease. Some common symptoms of acid reflux include heartburn, nausea, vomiting, regurgitation and ulcers of the esophagus. Acid reflux happens when the digestive acids produced in the stomach pushes (refluxes) into the esophagus from the stomach. There are many acid reflux causes, but unfortunately a cure has not been found.

One common acid reflux cause is when the muscle tissue located at the base of the esophagus, the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), does not function properly. This band of muscle, when working correctly, contracts and blocks acid from backing up into the esophagus. When the LES becomes weak or fails to operate, the barrier disappears causing acid reflux.

Hiatal hernia is another of the common acid reflux causes. A hiatal hernia happens when the hole where the esophagus meets the stomach, the hiatus, weakens and extends, or blows up like a balloon. Acid is able to enter into the esophagus when the hiatus is weak and not able to block it.

Two separate esophageal abnormalities can be acid reflux causes. The first of these abnormalities is found more often in adult males, but can be found in women, too. This abnormality is when rings form around the esophagus and constrict movement of food down to the stomach. The term for this abnormality is adult ringed esophagus.

A motility abnormality happens when the spontaneous muscle action in the esophagus fails. This motility abnormality and adult ringed esophagus can cause more unusual acid reflux symptoms such as chronic coughing and feeling like food is caught in the throat. The spontaneous muscle of the stomach can fail causing the more common acid reflux symptoms like heartburn. This is called impaired motility.

Asthma is another of the acid reflux causes, or is asthma caused from acid reflux? Both are true. Acid reflux causes asthma because of the upper respiratory problems that people with acid reflux disease often get. On the other hand, asthma can cause acid reflux from the weakening of the LES that is a problem associated with the asthma medicines forcing open the airways and/or from the constant coughing and wheezing that asthma causes.

Genetics can be a factor in people with acid reflux disease. Muscle mass and strength are determined by genetics, including the muscles of the esophagus and the stomach. However, these muscles can be strengthened with regular exercise to include targeted exercises of the stomach, chest and abdominal areas, along with a healthy, low fat diet. Peptic ulcers, some cancers, and diabetes can also be acid reflux causes.

There is no cure for acid reflux disease but the symptoms can be kept under control. Over the counter antacids are available to alleviate heartburn, as are prescription medications. The acid can be blocked by foam tablets taken orally. Surgery might be an option for some people with severe acid reflux disease and who are healthy enough for surgery. The first step in curing the symptoms of acid reflux is finding the cause.

How many first time parents, before their baby is even born, have these wonderful fantasies where mommy, daddy and baby live in complete and utter harmony? Most of us who have children now, realize that it was just a load of crap caused by overactive hormones.

Most times when parents bring home a new baby, they bring with them what their pediatricians call acid reflux in baby. What this means is that they cannot digest the regular type formulas that are available on the market. What this also means is that when they are fed these commercial formulas, it causing a horrible reaction that stuns baby and parents alike. This condition is simply called acid reflux in baby.

Nothing can be worse than bringing home a baby that seemed so happy and peaceful in the hospital, that now is home and screaming in pain.

What Should You Do?

If you listen to your Aunt Bertha, she may tell you that cod liver oil or ipecac in babys bottle will do the trick. There are other aunts, nanas, and cousins who will all weigh in on their opinion of what you should do when there is acid reflux in baby.

Your best bet, if this is a real problem for you, your husband and baby, is to speak in depth to your pediatrician to find out what the underlying cause of acid relax in baby can be from. It can be something as simple as a digestive system that is not ready for any foods yet, to allergies that may be waiting to be sprung on your child the minute they eat something that triggers it.

The important thing to remember is this is not a situation that is not going to last forever. Your little one will more than likely grow out of acid reflux in baby. This does not mean that when our baby is a big man or woman they wont experience this condition, but once your baby passes the line of acid reflux which is usually about three months, it shouldnt bother you again, unless you have another child.
